I am currently employed by the USAF for now and I have been working out for the past 11 yrs. I have been married to my wonderful wife Kate for 7 glorious yrs, and have a badass 5 yr old Vince. Hooray for supplements

So my supplements showed up earlier than I expected yesterday which was a nice unexpected surprise.  The chewable amino acid tablets are different but they're not horrible.  The pump-bol is fucking awesome!!!!  I took one scoop yesterday even though I wasn't going to the gym because it was a rest day; the pump I got from that stuff was unreal.  I took 2 scoops tonight when I went to the gym to do shoulders and I got an incredible pump; I got some nice focus as well.  It's been a long time since I had a pre-workout supplement that has worked this great.  My doctors appointment went well today.  Nothing new to report to her; the only thing that we discussed was that the weaning off the drugs will start at the end of the month.  The only hardcore pain right now is the muscle soreness; its freakin unbelievable right now.  And as far as my back is concerned its sore and stiff but nothing like its been before.  I really should have done this surgery sooner, but either way I'm glad I got it done.  Plus the time off from work is super awesome; and it also gives time to get everything in order in case the Air Force decides to kick me out.  I'm really hoping that they medically discharge me; I'm so sick and tired of the fucking bullshit that goes on here.  Its funny because you would think that you would get smarter as you make rank and gain job experience throughout the years.  But unfortunately it doesn't work like that; its exactly the opposite.  I have busted my ass over the past 10 yrs and I have got nothing but shit in return.  Actually that's not true; I now have 8 screws, 4 brackets, and 2 rods holding my lower spine together.  Sad part is that I'm only 29 yrs old; surgeries like that usually are for people 15-20 yrs older than I am.  All this crap has just made me stronger and more bitter lol.  I'm done ranting and spilling my guts for tonight; so peace.

Another day down

Knocked out chest and triceps today.  Did some incline flys, hammer machine incline press, and the pec deck machine.  For triceps I did some close grip press downs, regular tricep push downs, and then some dumb bell work.  My back barely bothered me throughout the entire thing; but its probably from taking a pain pill an hour before.  Plus I had a pretty decent pump through the entire workout which was a definite plus.  Also I have been noticing that my workouts have been lasting a lot longer; when I first started back at the gym I could barely make it through 30-45 mins.  Tonight I was in there for about an hour; so my stamina/endurance is definitely getting better.  Other than the gym today was kind of boring; finally watched "the warriors way" and it was badass.  Wasn't expecting much from that movie and it impressed me from beginning to end.  My supplement order will be on my door step around 3 p.m. and I will post my thoughts on them as soon as I use'em.  Also trying to decide whether or not to continue this whole blogging thing.  I'm only 4 posts in and I guess I was expecting more; like some comments by now or something.  I'll give it a month and then figure out whether or not to keep this thing going.

Back in the game

Sunday was a flop; I got sucked into playing the new NBA JAM all day.  The game is freakin awesome!!!  Back on topic I just got back from the gym; its really hard to stay within the 25lb limit but I am.  Performed hammer rows, superset of lat pulldowns (down to the front and then down behind the neck=1), pullovers, and a couple of half assed pullups.  For biceps I did incline dumb bell curls and then got on the bicep machine and did some close grip work.  Even though the weight is super low; I keep the reps high and concentrate on forcing blood into the muscle.  Ordered some supplements today got those chewable amino acids and got a tub of pump-bol.  Read some really good reviews on pump-bol and I'm excited to check it out.  My back aches all the way through the workout and I can't tell if its just my lower back muscles moaning and groaning or the actual fusion itself.  Hopefully it fades away.  Also March is the last of month of all the hardcore pain killers that I'm on right now.  I will start weaning down to something less extreme and hopefully it will control my pain as well as it is now.  I started a thread in bodybuilding.com about this blog and what I was going through; apparently my thread wasn't good enough to be posted in because I never got any responses.  Oh well I guess that's why I never posted on there before.  That's it for today; if anyone has any questions let me know.  I'm outta here

Where has it gone????

Yea so no gym yesterday or today; I seriously want to know what the hell happened to my motivation.  I know that the muscle pain and the soreness in back from lifting is really not that bad.  Yesterday I was supposed to do back and biceps; so now that gets pushed to Saturday. I do know that I tried going late morning/afternoon time but got caught up with family time.  3:00 is when everyone starts pouring into the base gym, and it gets crowded quick!!!  It's so freakin disappointing when I don't follow through with something; especially when it comes to the gym. 
On a different note I'm going to order some supplements some time next week hopefully.  I tried a sample of Amino Energy from Optimum Nutrition and it worked pretty well.  So I would like to get a jar of that and chewable amino acid tablets.  I already have some protein and creatine so adding those other 2 would be a nice bonus.  I was going to post the huge list of pain medications that I have taken in the past up until now, but I decided against that one.  But if anyone out there has any questions about a type of pain meds or what kind worked the best for me.  Just let me know

How it came to be

Today I will be hitting the gym later on in the evening, and I will post on how it went.  But I also wanted to explain how crappy the journey was and what it finally took to get to this point.  The question I always get asked is how did you injury back?  The pain started around April 2007 and there is no specific point in time where I can remember injuring my back.  The pain gradually started out and it finally got to the point where I needed to find out what was going on.  First off I have to tell you the doctors/nurses that I originally had to see were HORRIBLE.  It took 3 months of constantly going back to the docs to finally get a MRI done.  My first MRI showed L4/L5 and L5/S1 were bulging and they were pinching the S1 nerve that runs down the left side of my leg.  The first neurosurgeon performed all the required tests, told me what was going on back there; but she failed to see the anterior tear that I had at L5/S1.  I found out about the tear from a pain management doctor after he performed a discography; he then suggested that we should start steroid epidural shots.  Ultimately those failed.  When you're injured in the USAF they put on a "waiver"; basically restricting what you can do at work so that your injury heals and it doesn't get worse.  Even though I presented these restrictions to my supervisors I was still told to perform my normal duties.  Even while on pain medication I was told to perform all of my normal duties.  So as the months/years went by my back, S1 nerve, and pain level got worse.  All of my protests and restrictions fell on deaf ears.  I was referred out to a neurosurgeon down in Sacramento August 2008.  After looking over all my MRIs and discography he told me that I was looking at a spinal fusion.  In his opinion it was my best option at the time because the torn disc that I had was never going to heal and it was just going to continue to cause pain.  That answer scared the shit out of me.  The pain management doctor that I was seeing said that he would perform a neucleoplasty.  It was an outpatient procedure and he would stick a needle into the discs and pull out some of the material to hopefully reduce the size of the bulge.  After discussing both options with my wife Kate; we agreed that the neucleoplasty was a better option at the time.  When the day of the procedure came (Oct 2009) the doc told me that he was only going to perform the procedure on L4/L5.  I asked why he wasn't going to do the other disc and said that he couldn't do the procedure on torn discs; even though a month ago it was discussed that he would do both.  The heal time for a neucleoplasty is about 4 weeks; after 4 weeks was over I was still in the same amount of pain as I was before the procedure.  EPIC FAIL!  So after the disappointment of the failed procedure I thought I could just push on through the pain.  As the months passed and my mental and physical status got worse; I requested to be referred back to the neurosurgeon I saw back in 2008.  He looked over the latest MRI and saw that there was no real changes from when he first saw me.  The only other thing he wanted to see was an updated discography.  When the discography was done I found out that L4/L5 was torn now along with L5/S1.  After reviewing the result of the discography he agreed to perform the fusion.  The date of the surgery was set for September 28 2010.  So here I am now; I apologize for the lack of dates, and I hope that it wasn't confusing.  From November 2007 all the way up to the date of surgery was how long I bounce back and forth from the clinic here on base, to physical therapy, and to pain management doctors.  I asked the clinic why this took so long and the answer I was provided with was that they were there to control my pain and to refer me out to other doctors to fix my problem/injury.  They do not try to help fix injuries. 
And that's how all this went down.

It's my turn

So I have tried searching for information, stories, or something about people that have had spinal fusions and have gone back to the gym.  All I have found was more questions and how peoples' fusion has affected their career/personal life.  My goal is to let other people out there that it's possible to go back the gym; and to either gain new muscle or get back what they had.  I have been working out regularly for 11 yrs now, and what I want is to get back the size and strength I had before my surgery.  I am going to try and update this daily with how the workouts have been, pain levels of on and off days, and progression.  I welcome any criticism, your own personal experiences, and any other relevant information.  I work hard, play hard, and I am brutally honest.  So stay tuned!
